$4.92 million expansion for Warrnambool Airport
Warrnambool Airport will undergo a major expansion and runway upgrade as part of a multi-million dollar Victorian Coalition Government investment.
Premier and Member for South West Coast Denis Napthine was joined by the Minister for the Aviation Industry Gordon Rich-Phillips on site last Friday to announce funding for the $4.92 million Warrnambool Regional Aviation Park project.
The funding package announced will include $3.45 million towards the construction of an additional 20 hangars on top of the existing 16 hangars, more than doubling capacity at the airport.
In addition, the second runway, the grass runway which is inoperable during the wetter months, will be sealed and upgraded with a $622,000 investment, enabling it to be safely used year-round and providing predictable and consistent access to the airport for all operators.
The remaining funding will go towards building extra taxiways, hangar access roads, drainage and essential services, which will facilitate growth and jobs in the Great South Coast region.
“This project will encourage new and expanding aviation-related industries located onsite, facilitating private investment to help drive the region’s expanding and diversifying economy.”
The highly-anticipated redevelopment of Warnambool Airport was expected to provide $40.7 million in economic benefit to the south-west region, while the project would create 20 direct jobs, 19 indirect jobs and 11 construction jobs.
Minister Rich-Phillips said that the $4.92 million investment includes a $4.072 million Victorian Government contribution through the Regional Aviation Fund and the Regional Growth Fund. The Warrnambool City Council will contribute $750,000, and the remaining $100,000 will be provided by the Moyne Shire.
“The aviation industry is a major contributor to the state’s economy and across areas including training, maintenance, aerial agriculture and manufacturing,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.
“Aviation is particularly significant for regional Victoria, connecting towns and regions with vital services and enabling quicker, more convenient travel for residents.
