New abattoir brings hundreds of jobs to Dandenong

Press Releases

Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region Gordon Rich-Phillips has welcomed the construction of a new $30 million abattoir in Dandenong that will create hundreds of local jobs and help boost Victorian food exports to Asian markets.

“The Victorian Coalition Government is proud to support Australia Meat Group’s plan to develop an abattoir in Dandenong that will create more than 230 jobs in its first years of operation, eventually rising to more than 370 jobs,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

“Victorian meat exports to Asia are growing rapidly and the Coalition Government is working hard to help local businesses take advantage of this opportunity.”

The new Dandenong abattoir will provide processing facilities for Victorian livestock farmers, with output for both the domestic and export markets in Asia.

Premier Denis Napthine said the construction of the facility would deliver flow-on benefits, with the company sourcing the majority of the required building supplies and equipment from local Victorian businesses.

“The Coalition Government is committed to investing in productive infrastructure, helping to skill Victorians, and facilitating investment and export growth in the industries of the future,” Dr Napthine said.

“By supporting this development the Government is delivering goals set out in its Food to Asia Action Plan. Our vision is for an even stronger Victorian agriculture sector winning a growing share of the Asian market.”

This initiative is part of the Victorian Jobs in the 21st Century initiative, which commits $274 million to grow Victorian manufacturing, particularly in the high-end and knowledge-intensive sectors such as pharmaceutical manufacturing, food production, nanotechnology and robotics.

The plan will create 200,000 new jobs, 60,000 new apprenticeships and 850,000 new training places.
