Press Releases

Today marked the start of works to expand the Bunurong Memorial Park in Dandenong South, ensuring it will meet the needs of the community for the next 70 years.

Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region Gordon Rich-Phillips congratulated the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust on investing significantly to transform the cemetery into the largest in Melbourne’s south-east, which when complete will be almost three times the size of the Royal Botanical Gardens.

“The Victorian Coalition Government recognises the need for long-term planning to accommodate our growing population, and Melbourne’s need for burial space in coming years,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

“I congratulate the Southern Metropolitan Cemeteries Trust on their foresight in developing this cemetery and parklands over five stages to meet to needs of the community for the next 70 years,” he said.

Minister for Health David Davis said Bunurong Memorial Park was regarded as the heir apparent to the Springvale Botanical Cemetery.

“The 101-hectare Bunurong Memorial Park currently has about 2100 graves, 260 mausoleum crypts and 1370 cremation memorial spots available, but this will expand,” Mr Davis said.

Member for Carrum Donna Bauer said that Stage One of the Bunurong Memorial Park expansion included site infrastructure works, three chapels, five function rooms, a new administration building and 200 car parking spaces.

“Bunurong Memorial Park is part of the Napthine Government’s overarching plan to ensure that our growing city has enough burial space to meet current and future needs,” Mrs Bauer said.

“Established in 1994, Bunurong Memorial Park is well placed to meet forecast community need.”

The Victorian Coalition Government is committed to honouring the unique history found in the state’s cemeteries and will keep working to ensure that Victorian cemeteries and cemetery trusts get the support they need to preserve these important sites.

Since 2010 the Victorian Coalition Government has contributed $5.46 million to cemetery trusts for the upkeep of cemeteries around Victoria.
