Dandenong bowled over by Shepley Oval’s Keith Miller Pavilion

Press Releases

South east Melbourne’s aspiring cricket and football stars now have a base from which to launch their careers with the official opening of the $1.2 million redevelopment of the Keith Miller Pavilion at Shepley Oval in Dandenong.

Minister for Sport and Recreation Damian Drum joined Inga Peulich MLC, Member for South-Eastern Metropolitan Region, and representatives from Cricket Victoria and AFL Victoria at the weekend to launch the redeveloped pavilion, home to Victoria Premier Cricket League’s Dandenong Cricket Club and the TAC Cup’s Dandenong Stingrays, prior to Dandenong taking on Camberwell Magpies in their Premier Cricket clash at the ground.

Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region Gordon Rich-Phillips said that iconic sports venues such as Dandenong’s home of football and cricket played a vital role when it came to inspiring the next generation of champions.

“The new improvements are great news for Dandenong’s passionate sports community, especially for participants in the Dandenong Women’s Cricket Club who can now enjoy a more appropriate space to build on their ranks, deliver sports programs and take their game to a whole new level,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

The pavilion redevelopments feature new accessible change rooms, gymnasium, medical room, office space and amenities that cater for males and females of all ages and abilities.

“Nearby schools and local community groups can also access the pavilion for sports carnivals, local celebrations and education programs,” Mr Rich-Phillips said.

“I have no doubt the improvements will go a long way to uncovering the region’s next crop of cricket champions like Australian star James Pattinson and AFL footballers like Nathan Jones and Lachie Whitfield, who have all come through programs at Shepley Oval.

“These are just some of the reasons why the Napthine Government is proud to have invested $312,000 from the Community Facility Funding Program into this vital project.

“I would like to thank project partners the City of Greater Dandenong for contributing $650,000, AFL Victoria for contributing $200,000 and Cricket Victoria for contributing $40,000 towards the project,” he said.
