Andrews Government backflips on Abbotts Road
The Victorian Government has today been forced to make an embarrassing backflip on
its decision to close Abbotts Road in Dandenong South.
In February this year the Andrews Government revealed that it planned to permanently
close Abbotts Road as a cut price way to eliminate the level crossing.
The decision to close Abbotts Road was immediately met with community outrage from local residents and local businesses. The plan to close Abbotts Road breached the trust of the local community who were promised a grade separated Abbotts Road by the Labor Government.
The Liberal Nationals welcome the Andrews Government’s belated decision to reverse its planned closure of Abbotts Road.
The Andrews Government must now ensure that the Abbotts Road rail level crossing grade separation is given priority and delivered by 2018 as promised. The Government must also continue with its planned delivery of a rail overpass to connect Pound Road and Remington Drive.
Quotes attributable to Gordon Rich-Phillips, Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region:
Labor’s backflip on the closure of Abbotts Road is a win for the people of Greater Dandenong who knew that the plan would cause traffic chaos and hurt local traders.
Daniel Andrews must now urgently review other disastrous rail level crossing decisions made by his government for the south east, starting with his botched SkyRail plan that will divide communities along the Dandenong and Frankston rail corridors.
