Liberal Nationals save sporting clubs from Labor’s tax grab

Opposition Press Releases

The Liberal Nationals have stepped in to protect Victoria’s community sporting clubs from a massive tax hit at the hands of Daniel Andrews and Labor.

Labor’s tax bill sought to narrow the exemption that protects tennis, bowls, golf, footy and netball clubs across Victoria from being slugged land tax.

Currently, a sporting club using its land “primarily or substantially” for that purpose does not pay land tax. Labor tried to amend this to require that the land must be used “exclusively” for this purpose to qualify for the exemption.

Such a change would have seen sporting clubhouses – which often host non-sporting functions such as 21st birthdays, wedding receptions and conferences – subject to land tax for the first time.

This would have had a devastating effect on the viability of many sporting clubs across the state.

Amendments to Labor’s tax bill to delete these changes were successfully moved by the Liberal Nationals in the Parliament of Victoria this week.

As a consequence, Victoria’s sporting clubs will continue to have the same exemptions from land tax as they have traditionally received.

Comments attributable to Shadow Treasurer Michael O’Brien:

“Daniel Andrews and Labor were caught out trying to slug community sporting clubs with a huge land tax hike.

“Forcing sporting clubs to pay land tax on clubhouses would have a devastating financial effect. For many clubs, they would face closure.

“The Liberal Nationals are proud to support our tennis, golf, bowls, footy and netball clubs across Victoria. By defeating Daniel Andrews’ tax grab, we stood up for grassroots sport against a Labor government more interested in hiking taxes than in fostering community sport”.
