Liberal Nationals to boost safety in Box Hill

Opposition Press Releases

A Liberal Nationals Government will provide a major boost to safety and security for local suburbs in the electorate of Box Hill.

A Matthew Guy government will invest $375,000 in security cameras, better lighting and other crime prevention measures across suburbs including Box Hill, Box Hill North, Blackburn, Blackburn North and Mont Albert North.

The cameras and other measures will target crime prone and at-risk areas and facilities, such as walking and cycling paths, sporting facilities, parklands and shopping centre streets and lanes.

Since 2014, local suburbs have been hit by increases in home invasions, burglaries, theft and vandalism, with a growing problem of criminals using parklands and walking paths to target nearby homes.

The Springfield Park pavillion, home to local cricket and football clubs, was recently the target of a violent break-in and rampage that caused tens of thousands of dollars of damage and loss.

In central Box Hill, traders report ongoing problems with drug dealing, criminal damage and other crime, particularly in areas not covered by security cameras.

The Liberal Nationals’ commitment will fund a combination of fixed and mobile cameras, as well as lighting improvements and other measures, with final configuration and deployment to be determined in consultation with the local community, sporting clubs, Whitehorse City Council and Victoria Police.

Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:

“I will make Victoria safe again.

“A government I lead will get tough on crime by smashing youth gangs, fixing our bail system and introducing mandatory jail sentences for repeat violent offenders.

“Victorians have a choice at the next election between more of the same from Daniel Andrews or my new approach to get tough on crime.”

Comments attributable to Member for Box Hill, Robert Clark:

“Families should not have to live in fear of their home being invaded or burgled, their sporting club being ransacked or their shopping centre being vandalised.

“Crime has surged in our suburbs due to Daniel Andrews’ soft on crime policies, and it has to be stopped.

“Better crime prevention measures, along with more police on the streets and stronger sentences in the courts, will help make our suburbs safe again.”
