Labor Greens alliance threatens manufacturing in Victoria

Opposition Press Releases

Only a Labor Government desperately siding with the Greens would use taxpayers’ money to subsidise a factory, then make it illegal to sell its product.

The Andrews Labor Government offered global company Rinnai an undisclosed financial incentive – part of its $116 million ‘Investment Attraction and Assistance Program’ to establish a new manufacturing plant in Braeside, which opened in 2017.

A few days ago the Andrews Labor Government stunned the industry with a surprise ban on electric water heaters and some gas water heaters.

The proposed ban, outlined in the Plumbing Regulations 2018, would see electric water heaters and gas water heaters with anything less than a five-star energy rating banned from May 2019.

Rinnai manufactures electric water heaters at the site.

Only Labor could offer a company a financial incentive to establish manufacturing in Victoria and then attempt to ban the very product the company produces a few months later.

Energy Minister Lily D’Ambrosio now says the government will decide on the proposed changes after ‘further work’ had been undertaken.

It is a safe bet that the government will now delay making any decision until after the State Election in November so as not to annoy their Greens coalition partners.
