Make Victoria safe: Greater police presence in Heidelberg West

Opposition Press Releases

Every Victorian deserves to be safe and feel safe in their local community.

If elected to government in November, a Liberal Nationals Government will invest $3 million to place Mobile Police Stations at three new locations across Melbourne, including at the Bell St Mall in Heidelberg West.

Mobile Police Stations have been previously deployed at events across Melbourne and the Liberal Nationals will expand this program to provide a permanent police presence in activity hubs.

These new police vans will enable uniformed officers to be stationed in The Mall and allow them to respond quickly to any violent criminal behaviour, thefts and anti-social behaviour within the shopping area.

Daniel Andrews and Labor have failed to adequately provide a police presence in the Heidelberg West community despite rising crime rates and higher instances of violent crimes.

Crime Statistics Agency data shows crime in Heidelberg West has increased by 7%, Heidelberg Heights has increased by 11%, and Heidelberg has increased by 8.5% since Daniel Andrews was elected.

According to Police Association figures, frontline police numbers have fallen under Daniel Andrews with 190 fewer uniform officers than in 2013 despite Victoria’s population increasing by over half a million.

Daniel Andrews has also overseen the closure and a reduction in opening hours at many suburban police stations including Epping, Craigieburn and Ashburton police stations.

Only the Liberal Nationals will invest in more police officers on the beat, reopen police stations, and end the Labor Government’s soft-touch approach to crime.

Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:

“A Liberal Nationals Government will make Victoria safer. Under a Liberal Nationals Government, jail means jail.

Under the Daniel Andrews Labor Government, violent crime rates are at record high levels, yet frontline police numbers are down by 190 full time officers.

A Liberal Nationals Government will increase frontline police numbers, fund more PSOs, introduce tougher sentences and make bail and parole harder to get.”

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Ivanhoe, Monica Clark:

“Despite the growing violent crime rate in this area, Daniel Andrews and Anthony Carbines oversaw the closure of the Heidelberg West police station.

That’s why I have worked with Matthew Guy and the team to fund a Mobile Police Station at the Bell St Mall in Heidelberg West to increase police presence and improve local safety.

There’s a lot more to do but unlike Anthony Carbines I won’t sit by quietly and let Daniel Andrews to make more cuts to local frontline police numbers.”
