Shining a light on community safety

Opposition Press Releases

Bentleigh’s after dark safety problems will be rectified by a record investment in street, park and car parking lighting infrastructure.

A Matthew Guy Government will invest $300,000 in an After Dark Safety Plan which will improve neighbourhood lighting so joggers, workers and families can feel safe after dark again.

Local residents ought to feel safe after dark in their homes, streets and parks.

The Liberal Nationals’ After Dark Safety Plan will shine a light on drug dealing in local parks and deter opportunistic attacks on joggers, shoppers and late night workers.

Lighting priority black spots include:

• Public parks (Electorate-wide)
• Supermarket carparks (Electorate-wide)
• Tucker Road, Patterson Road, Brewer Road and Railway Crescent (Bentleigh)

Grants will be made available to the City of Glen Eira, the City of Kingston and the City of Bayside to address lighting black spots.

A Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) assessment will also be undertaken, working with Victoria Police and the respective local councils to further assist in identifying safety improvements for the Bentleigh area.

This investment also builds on the Liberal Nationals’ $340,000 investment in proactive crime prevention measures announced last month.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Edward O’Donohue:

“Daniel Andrews has let this crime wave grip our state and only a Matthew Guy Government will deliver the tough on crime policies to smash street gangs, lock up the worst of the worst criminals, support victims and deliver the targeted local solutions to crime and perceptions of crime.

“There’s a clear choice at the next election between Daniel Andrews and his soft touch or Matthew Guy who has listened to local communities and has the solutions to address this crime wave.”

Comments attributable to Liberal Candidate for Bentleigh, Asher Judah:

“Under Daniel Andrews and Nick Staikos, criminal offences in Bentleigh have increased 70.29%.

Bentleigh is now home to Victoria’s tenth largest increase in criminal offences. This is unacceptable.

Over the coming weeks my team will be consulting with the community and councils to nominate the proposed lighting sites. I encourage residents to contact me with suggestions at asher.judah@vic@liberal.org.au.”
