Enhanced safety lighting and CCTV coverage in Banyule and Nillumbik

Opposition Press Releases

Under Daniel Andrews, Victoria’s population has grown by around 500,000 but in that same time we have 190 fewer frontline police.

And because Daniel Andrews has lost control of population growth and we have fewer police, crime rates have gone up.

A Liberal Nationals Government will commit $700,000 to improve lighting and install more CCTV cameras at known crime hot spots across Banyule and Nillumbik.

Local community groups and residents will be able to nominate their local street, laneway, park or footpath as a potential location for improved lighting or CCTV coverage.

This announcement builds on the Liberal Nationals commitment to improve community safety by investing in Neighbourhood Watch across Victoria.

Potential safety lighting and CCTV priority black spots have been identified at:

• Eltham, Montmorency and Greensborough train station car parks
• Greensborough RSL
• Greensborough Veterans HUB in Lower Plenty
• Eltham-Montmorency RSL and Petrie Park
• Lower Plenty football ground
• Eltham football and cricket ground
• Eltham Bowls Club on Susan Street
• Lower Plenty First Scouts
• Montmorency football ground
• Were St. public toilets and car park lighting

Camera locations will be finalised following discussions with the two Councils and Victoria Police in government.

Since Daniel Andrews was elected, crime rates have increase across Banyule and Nillumbik, with a 62.4% increase in Lower Plenty, a 9.1% increase in Montmorency and 17.4% increase in Eltham North.

The Liberal Nationals will get back in control of rising crime rates by investing in more police on the beat, smashing street gangs and a ‘jail means jail’ approach to sentencing.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Ed O’Donohue:

Nick McGowan has worked hard to make sure a future Liberal Government supports local residents and local councils so they can respond to community concerns about street lighting.

Because Daniel Andrews and Vicki Ward have lost control of crime in the area, locals are worried to go out at night. A Liberal Nationals will make Eltham safe again.
